Captain America, Leather straps and Shiny Shields

Yesterday we talked about the announcement of Anne Hathaway joining the cast of the Dark Knight Rises. Then last night I saw MARVEL drop these little beauties in my inbox. The first shots of Chris Evans in his full Captain America gear.

It’s an interesting approach to the costume. Granted that this is a realistic approach to how the outfit would have looked during WWII. However, I doubt that we would have emblazoned our secret weapon with a giant “SCREW YOU GERMANY” sign such as the bold blue exterior of Cap would appear to say.

The exposed neck is an obvious weak point, but we can probably guess that a stray bullet to the neck will probably not be the way this movie ends.

The red gloves and boots have taken on a subtle maroon to look more authentic. Overall I think it looks pretty cool. It’s a bit more elaborate than Batman, but for a 1940’s leather superhero costume, it does it justice.

As far as the expectations of Captain America: The First Avenger, which will burst into theaters July 22, 2011, I generally think I will be impressed. Chris Evans was not my first choice of actors for Cap. Not to say I don’t enjoy Chris Evans in his previous roles, but his standard snarky cocky tough guy didn’t really seem to fit into Captain America as much as some other snarky tough guys out there. However, he certainly looks the part of Steve Rogers and I will wait to pass final judgement until at the very least we get a trailer.

If you haven’t been paying attention, Hugo Weaving will be lending his incredible talent to embody the Red Skull. Sebastian Stan will be showing up on the scene as the plucky sidekick, Bucky.

Also, while I’m at it, here’s a sneak at Andrew Garfield in the new Spiderman suit.

To be perfectly honest if I saw this from a distance I don’t think I’d notice it wasn’t Tobey Macguire. Still the detail on the suit looks nice. This iteration of Spiderman crawls into theaters July 3, 2012, and Mary Jane Watson gets stuck on the sidelines for this one, Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, will be the romantic interest. Also it has been confirmed that J. Jonah Jameson has been benched entirely for this film, although the Bugle will be involved in some way.
